3 Tips for Managing OCD Triggers During Seasonal Changes
I know for me personally, this time of year with winter around the corner, I usually feel an increase in my own anxiety + ocd symptoms. If this is you too, here are 3 tips that you may find helpful:
→ Acknowledge Seasonal Stressors Without Judgment: The changing season can be a time of heightened stress, especially if you notice that your OCD symptoms are flaring up. Instead of fighting these feelings, acknowledge them with self-compassion. Remind yourself that it's okay to experience discomfort and that the seasonal shift is a common time for many to feel more vulnerable. Labeling the trigger as "just a seasonal change" can help you reduce its emotional intensity.
→ Refocus on Your Values Instead of Seeking Certainty: OCD loves to thrive in uncertainty, and seasonal changes can make everything feel more unpredictable. Instead of engaging with intrusive thoughts, focus on what truly matters to you in this season. Maybe it's spending quality time with family, engaging in a meaningful hobby, or practicing self-care. By staying grounded in your values, you shift your attention from what OCD is telling you to what aligns with your authentic self.
→ Create a "Seasonal Self-Care Plan:"When you're aware that this time of year tends to trigger your OCD, it's helpful to create a proactive self-care plan. This could include regular mindfulness practices, journaling, or scheduling time for activities that bring you joy and peace. Incorporating these into your routine can give you tools to manage OCD symptoms before they escalate, helping you navigate the season with more confidence.
While this time of year can be triggering, you don’t have to face it without support.
Rooting for you,
